Castel Viscardo – Church of the SS. Annunziata

zoom on the photo

The parish church dedicated to Mary of the Annunciation was commissioned in 1682 by Orazia Spada in CASTEL VISCARDO (TR – UMBRIA) from the architect Giuseppe Brusati Arcucci. The brick and stone facade is late Baroque. The bell tower has a round dome covered with scale tiling. The single-nave interior contains a wealth of fine marbles and paintings. The Annunciation on the high altar is by Nicolò Tornioli (1598-1651). The four chapels along the nave contain paintings by Carlo Maratta (1683-84), Wernle, a German painter in the service of the Spada, and Bernabei di Perugia. The ivory crucifix was a gift of the Sun King of France to Cardinal F. Spada. The Turkish banner is a war memento.
