The Bishop’s Palace was originally built in ORVIETO (TR –
UMBRIA) in 977 by Benedict VII. Popes, Cardinals and Bishops continued
to add rooms and decoration as time passed. The Gothic arches of what
was once a chapel are visible inside, while outside the two-light and
lovely pointed three-light windows overlook the piazza. The decorative
elements of the capitals, the quatrefoils and broad band of projecting
and receding checkerboard design, bear witness to the imposing building
program and the high level of art in Orvieto in the second half of the
thirteenth century. Some of the rooms in the palace are now the premises
of the National Archaeological Museum.
