Roma – Roman walls of the Janiculum

zoom on the photo

In the middle of the seventeenth century Urban VII (Maffeo Barberini, pope from 1623 to 1644) thought ROME (LAZIO) needed new walls along the side of the Janiculum. The hill by itself already served as a natural fortress since from the west it loomed over the entire city, but the old frontier built by Aurelian almost fourteen centuries earlier was not in good condition and would no longer have been adequate defense.
