Viterbo – Università “La Tuscia”

zoom on the photo

The convent dedicated to Santa Maria in Gradi was built in VITERBO (LAZIO) at the end of the thirteenth century when Raniero Capocci gave the hill to the Dominican order. Of particular importance are the two cloisters, one medieval with a portico in Gothic style and a fountain, and the other Renaissance. The church, in which Pope Urban IV was crowned, was torn down in the sixteenth century and rebuilt in neoclassic style in the eighteenth to plans by Nicolò Salvi. From the second half of the nineteenth century to 1993 it was used as a prison and is now the premises of the offices of the rector and of the administration of the University of Tuscia.
